Barcelona have had an amazing first half of the season, but the manager Tito Vilanova has urged his players to resist into thinking that they will remain invincible throughout the season. Barcelona have managed to drop just two points in the first half of the season. Aside from the league campaign, they have suffered just two defeats in the other competitions. This has led to many believing that this could finally be the year that the team can go undefeated throughout the entire league campaign. However, Vilanova has said that it is easy to get complacent once players start thinking that they can go unbeaten.
Barcelona currently have created a record by having the most number of points midway through the campaign. They have 55 points from a possible 57, which has never been achieved before. They can quite realistically aim at beating Real Madrid’s record of more than 100 points, which they set last season. The 5-1 win over Malaga has left Barcelona top of the table with 11 point advantage over Atletico Madrid and an even bigger advantage of Real Madrid, who are in the third position. Vilanova recently returned to the Barcelona dugout following his struggles with cancer, and he has urged his players to not get complacent.
“It’s fantastic but we can’t stop here. We are not invincible. Everything we’ve achieved up until now is thanks to the effort we’ve put in and our eagerness to win. The day we don’t play at a high level is the day we lose. It wouldn’t be normal. There is the Champions League and the Copa del Rey… we need to go to Atletico, to Madrid. It was unthinkable to have this advantage at the start of the season,” said Vilanova after the Malaga match, which helped them open an 18 point advantage over Madrid.
