Barcelona’s Lionel Messi started earning major individual awards and trophies since 2009 when the Argentine forward received the 2009 FIFA Ballon d’Or and from there on out Messi has kicked off an illustrious career where he continues earning more pieces of silverware as each season passes on and more records being broken.
One of the latest records that Messi managed to break was the Champions League goal-scoring record which was established by Real Madrid’s Raul as the Spanish attacker had scored a total of 71 goals in the European competition but Messi became the new top goal-scorer after scoring his 74th goal in the Champions League during Barcelona’s victory against APOEL which was played on November 25 at the GSP Stadium in Cyprus.
Lionel Messi went on expressing and revealing his emotions after breaking the record that was established by Raul.
“It’s nice to get the record in such a beautiful competition but the most important was the victory. We played a great game.We’re Barça and we’ll try to achieve our goal at beginning of the year to win everything. We have to stay on this path.” Lionel Messi told reporters.
Barcelona is already qualified into the next rounds of the Champions League as they progressed past the group stages but the Spanish club will be facing off against PSG on December 10 in order to determine which team is going to snatch the top spot of Group F.
Athletic Madrid are the current champions of Spain as they claimed the Spanish League title in the previous while Real Madrid are the current defenders of the Champions League after having won the European competition in the last campaign. Barcelona failed on winning any major trophies in the previous season but they are aiming to recover from it and aim high this time around.
