Barcelona move closer to the title by beating Sporting Gijon 6-0.
With Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid winning earlier on the day, Barcelona had to win if they wanted to recapture their first place. And they did it brilliantly by scoring 6 goals in a one-sided encounter.
It was Gijon, however, who started the game well and even had an opportunity through Menendez. The latter, however, fired a weak shot at the Barcelona goalkeeper. However, Messi will not commit the same mistake. 60 seconds later, Barcelona was ahead thanks to a Messi header. The goal help to calm down some nerves and Barcelona began to play more freely.
They will create some occasions before the break but will be denied several times by the Sporting Gijon goalkeeper and defence. First, it will be Suarez that will get his shot deflected and secondly it will be Neymar that would be denied. This means that the game reached half-time with the score at 1-0.
But Barcelona will improve massively after the break by playing at a much higher tempo. Suarez will double the lead in the 63rd minute after a precise ball from Iniesta.
The referee will award Barcelona a couple of penalties which Suarez and Neymar will convert. The first penalty will be awarded in the 74th minute after a handball from Canella. On the 78th minute, Suarez will score again on a penalty which this time was given after a foul from Sanabria on Neymar
Barcelona will be awarded another penalty in the 86th minute after Vranjes was judged to have foul Neymar. The latter will convert the penalty to make it 5-0 for Barcelona. Suarez will score a final goal in the 88th minute to make it 6-0 for Barcelona.
